Health and safety in hotels: Are you doing enough to protect your guests?

Health and safety measures are among the most important aspects of hotel management. They aim to prevent and/or reduce any potential threats to both hotel guests and employees. As such, they cover a range of aspects in the everyday operations that you will need to consider.

Create a health and safety audit

The health and safety audit aims to reveal existing strengths and weaknesses in your health and safety plan, thus pointing out potential gaps you need to resolve before they ever make it from theory to practice. The audit can cover certain aspects or the whole system.

Create a detailed plan

As health and safety measures cover a variety of aspects, it is important to create a clear and detailed plan that will serve as a step-by-step guide for putting those measures into practice and tracking their progress. This plan should list all health and safety procedures, routines, and employee training plans.

Evaluate and update the plan frequently

The effectiveness and implementation of your health and safety plan should be evaluated frequently to identify potential gaps and adapt the plan to practical experience. Assign a person or a team to oversee your efforts and make sure each relevant department is included.

Train employees

All hotel departments need to be ready for any emergency. This means you need to provide training for all your permanent, part-time, and casual employees, with no exceptions. Although this might be somewhat time-consuming, consider it an effort smaller than the one you will have to make if anything goes wrong.

Educate guests

If any emergency occurs, you will need your guests to cooperate as efficiently as possible. Therefore, ensure they understand their hotel and security responsibilities.

Promote your efforts

As the hospitality industry deeply relies on its relationship with consumers, you need to promote your health and safety efforts. Communicate them to both your guests and employees.
